It was some time from the previous Xposed theme, and right now two new themes are in the works. One theme will be new version of the current newsScape theme and it will be called newsScape II, second theme is a brand new design currently in works and without a name right now.
Based on the feedback from old newsScape theme and updates in the design, new newsScape II will be similar to old theme, but with few new elements, improved slider and more. Second theme is still in design stages, and I hope to have more information soon. Plan is to make both these themes as responsive, and that will take some additional time to allow something like that in the framework. There are plans for new development cycle for xScape that will soon go into work, and that will include support for upcoming GD Star Rating and few more things planned before.
For now, if you have some suggestions for newsScape II based on your experience with old one, please let me know.

Yes, both with HTML5 and with least images possible. Layout for current newsScape is almost image-free, new one will be similar to that also.
