Release: With all the new added features that were not previously planned, plugin 1.0 release is delayed a bit. Current target date is February 9 2012. Until than, one or two RC versions will be released to fix bugs. No new features will be added until than. If the number of bugs requires, plugin release date can be delayed for couple of days to make sure that plugin is released as stable as possible.

Importing and updating products from CSV file is completed, and export updated to include images, video links and links. Plugin can import images from given URL into the WordPress (there are exceptions and will not work with websites that use hotlinking protection). To make change for rendering templates easier, plugin now supports settings for the templates globally (for the whole plugin and all product types) and you can set this individually for each product type. You can still set it in the theme, and xScape Themes Framework will still use own method of setting these rendering templates. Also, one more theme got direct support: Mystique. This is for the full version of this theme that works with auto child theme.

In the next week video tutorials will be released: Import/Export with CSV file, Quick features overview, In depth plugin use, Themes support, xScape Themes Integration. Please report any bugs found, I am sure that some more are still in the plugin. Future plans for the plugin are updated and listed for the next 5 milestone versions. Release: With all the new added features that were not previously planned, plugin 1.0 release is delayed a bit. Current target date is February 9 2012. Until than, two more beta is coming early next week with import implemented and one or two RC versions.

New simple widget is added for searching products. You can fix product type to fix, or you can allow visitors to select the product type. For all products related pages, plugin is setting additional CSS classes so you can use for your own styling. New shortcode is added to generate link to products home page, archive pages and single products. Previous shortcode for embedding products is expanded to include class and style for the product added. Shortcodes are in the documentation.

Frontend rendering is improved further with new styling. Also, main rendering style file has all colors separated, and because of that you can use built in styling, and only change colors. All xScape themes will get color schemes stying for the plugin soon. And any other theme can use this to make styling easier. Updated Xposed and R8 themes will be released tonight with this new styling added.

As for the bugs, new version fixed the problem with missing theme templates controls, eStore theme integration templates are also fixed. Additional product pages linking was broken due to canonical rewriting problems. When plugin is updated, rewrite rules were flushed, but that was not working fine, this is fixed now. Many styling problems are fixed.

Please report any bugs found, I am sure that some more are still in the plugin.

New main template for product types list page is done, and it can list registered product types with images set for them (new option added in the product type editor). Currently one template for it is included, with 2 more coming next week. xScape and other themes support include new theme template for this page type.

Compare and product types list pages have new settings for page titles. This code and settings can work with normal theme title functions, and they can tie into xScape Theme Framework and WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin. Conditional functions for page types are added, and main WordPress Query object modified with them also. And new default product type template data is added for Television. Default plugin styling is improved for better look across browsers and themes. The bugs are fixed: products info is missing if the sorting order is changed, properties editor was setting wrong item types, some minor layout bugs are also fixed. Central Documentation on Dev4Press is updated with latest functions.

Data Import / Export

First new feature is new tool for importing and exporting products data. Right now, export is functional (import will be soon) and includes: product name, taxonomies terms and all properties values. Media values will be added later. Tutorial on this will be published later tonight.

New page type is added and it is used to display list of all product types. This new page type has an empty template right now, but it will be functional very soon. More on this in a day or two.  New template for it is added for all supported themes. If you use xScape themes, you need to update to latest xScape Core 1.8.1.1.

List of themes directly supported by the plugin has increased to include: Canvas and Wootique (from Woothemes), eStore (from ElegantThemes) and Socrates. These themes have theme templates prepared and included. Most of the ElegantThemes themes are similar in strucutre to eStore, so you can use it for other themes from theme (maybe with small modifications). Same goes for Woothemes. More themes will be directly supported, giving a wider choice of theme templates to use for themes that are not directly supported.

Default styling for rendered products, archives and compare pages is improved and several visual problems fixed, so rendering should look good with most themes. You can always make your own styling and disable default styling. I can’t make styling that will be for specific themes, you must make changes you need. Other fixes in this version include: filtering issues with some plugin templates and broken rewrite rules for archives. To make sure that this is working for you, please clear all rewrite rules, and plugin will generate new rules that will be now OK.

In the next couple of weeks I will have some important information regarding integration with several third-party plugins. Also, new plugin and demo website will be up during this week. Please report any bugs found, I am sure that some more are still in the plugin.

Header and contend detail

First xScape based theme in 2012 will be called Xposed. This will be HTML5 theme, it will have 4+4 built in color styles, one sidebar widgets area, one footer widgets area, static page showcase block, Nivo powered featured posts slider. This is portfolio, showcase and blog theme.

Theme will be completed and available during next week, and also, it will be used on the website for GD Products Center Pro plugin. Until that time, here is a little more information and few preview images.

Widgets and footer detail

Xposed uses 18 column Blueprint grid layout with 950px in width. Normally works as a blog based theme, but with the help of two useful layout block it can be used as portfolio or showcase theme. These blocks are for a single page, and featured posts slider. As with several previous themes, this one will use Nivo jQuery slider.

Pager and widgets detail

There will be 4 color schemes, and each will have two styles: one with the textured/pattern images for background and one with plain colors. This will make theme very lightweight and effective. Since it will be HTML5 theme, to retain compatibility with older browsers, Modernizr JavaScript will be used if needed.

Along with the new theme, xScape Theme Framework 1.8.1 will be released with new Google fonts and many improvements and fixes.

Products Types Grid

On image above you can see improved products types grid. Both this one and taxonomies grid are updated. Templates panel now lists in more detail all available templates. Each type of template is displayed as a tab. For future 1.1.0 release I plan to add editor for each template from this panel.

New widget is added for rendering list of products. You can limit and filter products to display, similar to single product widget from before. Also, if you need to embed product info into your blog posts or some other unrelated pages, you can use new shortcode: gdpc_product, details and use are in the documentation.

As for other changes, there are number of small improvements, several bugs fixed (deleting taxonomy and product types selection in the widget), updated gdr2 and gdT3 libraries. Also, code handling custom rewrite rules is improved further. I have added functions that can be used to debug WordPress rewrite rules resolving and list of registered rewrite rules. These functions are in the Central Documentation.

There will be one more beta (0.9.5) before final, and that one will be used to finalize all templates and fix bugs. This major beta is expected in about 7 to 10 days, final should be out before the end of this month. Please report any bugs found, I am sure that more are there. I am testing plugin with different themes, but I might be missing things.

For each of the listed feature, you will see the plugin version number when the feature is added, and post will be updated over time to reflect the changes made to the plugin. All features in red are completed in the latest available version. Features in green are close to completion.

1. Product Type editor: main editor for the product type used to set name, labels, rewrite rules, images, videos and product specification properties. Product types are implemented through custom post types, but most of the parameters are generated by the plugin, user don’t need to set everything in detail. (0.7 Alpha , 100% done)
2. Product Type data: each product is a post for a custom post type. When creating or editing product, you will use standard WordPress post editor. But, this editor will be expanded with meta boxes generated by the plugin based on the settings for product type. So, you will get Product Properties meta box with all properties you have set for product type and you will get Product Media and Links that will allow you to add images, videos and external links to the product. All 3 can be limited in number on the product type editor. Images can be external or handled by Media Library. Videos can be external link for websites that support eEmbed: YouTube, Vimeo and many more. (0.7 Alpha, 100% done)
3. Product Type pages: each product will get several pages in the front end of the website. Right now plugin support 5 page types: specification, author review, user reviews, related products and media. Author review can have more than one page allowing for long reviews. User reviews is basically comments thread and media page is a gallery of all product images and videos. (0.8 Beta, 100% done)
4. Built-in product types: to make things easier to get started with the plugin, adding new product type will have templates. If you choose one of the offered template, plugin will create new product type from selected template will all predefined properties and settings. You can change things if you want and you will get working product type very quickly. Number of product types will be expanded, and first 0.7 Alpha has 4 of them. (0.9.7 Beta, 100% done)
5. Built-in taxonomies: one more convenient feature is creation of taxonomies. This is also simplified version for those that don’t use our GD Custom Posts and Taxonomies Tools plugin. Also, creating new taxonomy here will give you choice of predefined templates for some useful taxonomies, similar to predefined product types. (0.7 Alpha, 100% done)
6. Custom permalinks rewrite rules: plugin has many customization options to create products permalinks and you can control the rules added with custom slugs for different page types, compare or products pages and more. (0.7.5 Alpha, 100% done)
7. gdT3 Templates System: for all rendering plugin uses Dev4Press own gdT3 templates system. Templates are stored into files, support mixing of HTML and PHP with special tags used for plugin specific features. Plugin has several types of templates: single product, archives, widgets, compare page. Themes and other plugins can replace default templates or add own templates. (0.9 Beta, 100% done)
8. Compare Products: template and rewrite rules for products comparison. Plugin allows comparing 2 or more products in the same time. Default styling for the plugin can support many products compared to make it easier to see wide lists. (0.8 Beta – 100% done)
9. Simple archive filtering: simple filtering of products will be done using taxonomies only with the basic sorting options. There are 2 different templates built in for this displaying products in grid or list. (0.7 Alpha, 100% done)
10. Archive filter Template: complex filter that allows use of product properties and taxonomies, filtering by date, sorting by different criteria. (0.9.7 Beta, 100% done)
11. Full xScape Theme Framework support: all themes have templates built in for this plugin. And, plugin will be able to create and preset templates automatically in one of the next versions. (0.8 Beta – 100% done)
12. Support for any theme: for default WP themes plugin comes with example templates you can use to make it work. Similar method will work with any other theme. Also, plan is to have plugin copy the templates over into theme folders. (0.7.5 Alpha, 100% done)
13. Widget for Comparing: to add products to compare you can use widgets. From many page, you can add products to the widget and than run comparison from it, leading to compare page. You can have more than one compare widget in the same time, and one compare widget can be used for only one product type, because you can’t compare products from different types. Compare widget can have limit of the most products to compare. (0.7 Alpha – 100% done)
14. Widget for Single/Random Product: show one product in the widget using own template to display product specification and image. Widget will allow options for filtering the product to display. (0.8.8 Beta – 100% done)
15. Widget for Products List: template based rendering for the products with basic filtering options. One list widget can display products from one product type only. (0.9 Beta – 100% done)
16. Widget for Products Search: add simple widget to allow searching for the products only with selectable product type. (0.9.7 Beta, 100% done)
17. Maintenance tools: to make the process of cleanup easier, and to have a way of clearing cached data, Tools panel has a tool that allows you to remove cached templates, registration data and rewrite rules. (0.7 Alpha, 100% done)
18. Import and Export: once you create product types and taxonomies, it will be useful to export that data from one website and have that imported on another website. These tools will make that very easy. (0.7.5 Alpha, 100% done)
19. Shortcodes and Functions: Shortcodes and functions that can be used to embed products into different posts. They will allow using products on any page on the website. (0.9.5 Beta, 100% done).
20. Export to file and Import Data from File: bulk export and import formatted data for multiple products using plain text CSV file that include full specifications for products. (0.9.8 Beta, 100% done).

This is current features list, and I expect few things to be added during development. As for the features beyond 1.0.0 version, this is yet not set, but here is the current preliminary list:

1. Integration with bbPress: assign topic to a product and display discussion on the product as a page incorporated with the plugin. (planned for 1.1.0)
2. Expanding Sitemaps: support for different XML sitemaps plugins to add products pages, comparisons and other new links and archives. (plnned for 1.1.0)
3. Additional product pages: for each product/product_type you can define extra pages that will be included in the pages list for the product navigation. (planned for 1.1.0)
4. Archive URL variations: specify different archive templates use based on the URL for the archive. This will allow special archive pages for different uses. (planned for 1.1.0)
5. Advanced search template: new template to include different page layout for searching products based all multiple multi value criteria. (planned for 1.2.0)
6. GD Star Rating 2.0: once the GDSR 2.0 is released, GD Products Center will fully support it and templates will be modified for direct integration. (planned for 1.5.0)
7. GD aZon FUSION Integration: get products data from Amazon via this plugin. Amazon auto added as the Seller with adding links to products in the system. (planned for 1.4.0)
8. Product Editions: one product can have variations like color, more or less memory… Instead having duplicate products, set up versions of same product. (planned for 1.2.0)
9. Vendors/Selers/Stores: setting up vendors and assign product types and products to them for pricing control for different product versions. (planned for 1.2.0)
10. Statistics Display: panel to show visits statistics for different product types and products. (planned for 1.3.0)

As the bugs go, there were few minor issues with the templates, and problem with saving currency unit properties. Beside that, there are couple of new features added. There is a working widget to display single product (you can specify product type, filtering and template) with only one specific template right now (more to come soon). Archive templates are improved to support page navigation, and there is a simple and advanced. Simple is only next/previous links, while advanced shows numbered pages. All archive templates use advanced navigation right now.

By the end of next week 0.9 Beta will be out with more filter/search improvements and few more new minor features. Please report any issue you might have with this latest version.

Bugs fixed in this version include: you can change product type name (this is fixed, and name can be changed only if no products are added for the product type), product type name wasn’t cleaned up properly and it could have empty spaces left in, built in default theme templates for TwentyTen and TwentyEleven themes had some problems causing product pages to appear empty (new templates are added) and some of the integration functions had minor issues that are now also fixed.

Plugin front page info

Plugin front page is beginning to take shape, and on the right you can see detail screenshot of that page showing registered product types with basic information.

When adding templates to the theme, you can now use overwrite option, to create templates again and revert them to default state (useful to fix issues with previous version broken templates). Also, after you edit product type, you will get direct option to create theme templates. Each product now has a simple meta box to display pages statistics and how many times each of the product pages has been displayed.

Compare pages got own tracking now, and each time a compare page is displayed, plugin will save information about products compared, user ID (if logged in), user IP and time.

Some of the plugin features will not be usable and controlled for network mode for whole network and individual websites. This means that: Admin Bar, SMTP, Maintenance Mode and Debugger will be both site and network modules. Sitemap Generator and SEO will be site only modules. Settings saving will be changed, plugin loading optimized and new modules based core structure improved. With these changes whole network can be put under maintenance mode, individual sites in the network can control SMTP settings and debugger.

Other changes will include: Cron panel can show source for the jobs, main tracker (used by debugger) can be load from the wp-config.php, database panel takes into account table engine, and plugin can take into account differences between MyISAM and InnoDB engines. As for the fixes, minor network problems are taken care of, minor problems with FaceBook image meta tag with some themes.

In continuation of adding SEO features, support for robots meta tags is expanded with custom post types and custom taxonomies. Also, 3 more robots meta tags are added, specific to Google search engine, bringing total of supported robot tags to 11.

New plugin version will be released on November 28 2011.

This version includes complete data saving process, and it has been changed from previous versions. Some of the old data will be lost due to the format changes.

New filter example

New plugin version is ready and we are getting close to implementing all planned features for 1.0 release. This time, focus is on filtering in searching that includes use of product properties. Example of the filter for the product archive is displayed on the image on the right. At this moment, not every property type can be used for filtering, and even when everything is done, some fields will not be usable. Right now, property types that support filtering are: select (normal, radio or check), boolean, resolution. Units and dimensions are coming in next version. Also, only one value can be selected, but in the final 1.0 plugin will use multi selection controls.

To help with filtering, plugin creates index tables in the database. Plugin has a tool for reindexing. New beta supports new context help model in WordPress 3.3. Also, many more minor changes, updates and fixes are included with this version, including updated jQueryUI and gdr2 libraries. Also, some visual elements are now updated to latest specification used for all other Dev4Press Pro plugins. About page is also added.

One more features is added to the list based on suggestions from users: integration with bbPress 2.0 plugin to assign topic to a product and integration. Hopefully, this would be possible to do for the next beta or maybe final release. I would like to see suggestions on layouts to have built in for the archives, single products and compare page. Right now there are several templates for each of these (only one for compare), but I will add as many more as needed.

Property types: Unit, Dimensions, Resolution and Boolean will be changed. Right now each one was saved in the single record in the postmeta table. But, because of that, search and filtering by these property types is impossible. To change this, saving of these fields will recalculate values to base values for the unit (unit and dimensions) and save them into 2 or more fields. So, dimensions will go into 3 fields, resolution into 2 fields, boolean into 1 or 2 fields, and unit into one field.

To make things even easier to filter or search, some of the property types will be indexed into separate tables in the database. This will be done for resolution, dimensions, units and text fields that are marked for filtering. Index can be rebuilt any time and will allow for very precise filtering of posts.

All these changes, with new advanced filtering templates are going to be the part of 0.9 Beta release that will be released next Monday at the latest.

Selecting Related Products

To complete set of features for individual products, plugin has expanded editors. One of the meta boxes is expanded with related products, so you can select other products from same product type or other product types as related to current product. They will be displayed on the product related page. Also, for each product, a third meta box is added where you will be able to set some important settings. Right now, this includes page visibility, so you can have some of the product pages disabled if you don’t want them for every product.

Rendering for products is improved, extra templates added. With all the current changes, plugin has most of the planned features completed. Right now, only one major feature remains: advanced products filtering. This will be done for 0.9 Beta version, and it is the next thing to develop for this plugin.

Current WordPress 3.3 schedule should reach beta stage in the first or second week of October, and final version should be out in December. Some delays may happen, but it shouldn’t be more than a week or two. Current stage of WordPress 3.3 development is stable enough to start testing plugins and themes with.

I have installed 2 separate instances for development environment (one of them for multisite), and quick preliminary tests didn’t revealed any feature incompatibilities with any of our Pro plugins or xScape Theme Framework and themes. There are some minor visual problems (as expected) due to the changes in the admin side interface for WordPress 3.3, but that’s about it.

This is only first testing stage, so more in depth testing will continue over the following weeks. If you are running current WP 3.3 development versions, and if you find any problems with Dev4Press plugins and themes, please report all problems in the forum. As always, goal is to have all our products up to date with upcoming WordPress before stable version is released.

With 0.7.5, plugin is already usable and most of the features completed. One rendering template is missing (related posts), and advanced filtering is not done yet, widgets are in starting stages. These missing features will be added in the next 10 days, and by the end of the month we will be very close to stable 1.0.0 release.

Import and export tools are added (image on the right), users reviews templates finished, once uploaded, images will be attached to products/post also, allowing you easier manipulation and reusing them in the product review, default styling is imporved, few new tags and directives for rendering added.

Over the weekend, plugin images, descriptions, video overview will be added, and in the middle of the next week, 0.8 version can be expected.

I am looking into different solutions for encryption, and as it looks now, PHP mcrypt extension  is best solution of this. Problem is that servers can be set up without this extension installed. Other solutions are much slower than mcrypt that on its own is slow already. Tests I did show that the even the simplest encryption can slow the process 20 or more times. Also, encrypting a single file requires memory, so that also limits the amount of data PHP can handle for this.  Problem with encryption in PHP is that must be in memory operation. If you need to encrypt the file, that file must be loaded, encrypted and saved. There are no stream based functions, partial encodings and things like that in PHP. Also, in most cases PHP can be assigned maximum of 256MB of RAM, new servers, new PHP versions allow up to 4GB (as far as I know).

At this point I am thinking of encrypting database data. Encrypting PHP files can be pretty pointless, since most of the installation is WordPress, themes and plugins that don’t hold anything worth encoding. And to encode uploaded files, images, videos and things like that will be very complex to do and again, limiting by the size.

To encrypt database data there are few approaches to it. If the backup is done using mySQL dump, only way to make encryption is to encrypt the database file. But, to do that, file must be smaller than 100MB (with GZIP that can be achieved). 100MB GZIP SQL file can hold typically up to 500 MB database. So, big websites can’t use this method. For instance, Dev4Press website right now has 100MB database, packed in under 15 MB GZIP. The whole file is encrypted after backup. If database backup is made using SQL functions in plugin, encryption can be done same way as described before on the completed file. But, also, I can attempt to encrypt parts of the data before writing them into file. This will be very complicated to do, but it is doable.

Encrypting files can be done also, but the more files to encrypt, the slower the backup process will be. Dev4Press website, full backup takes about 3 minutes to backup everything (500 MB). From encryption tests I did, for 100% encryption this can take up to an hour or even more, with also high CPU usage during this period, and that can leave your website unresponsive.

So, what to do? I am open to suggestions on how to handle encryption for backups. If you have examples on how to handle large file encryption, tips on how to do it, or suggestions on what to encrypt, how to go around PHP limitations, please leave comments, or contact me directly if needed.

Meta box: Tags

New GD Custom Posts And Taxonomies Tools 3.2 Pro is almost ready, and this new release candidate is here to make sure that bugs are squashed before the release. All planned features are in this one including support for the new tagger API’s in the post editor meta boxes.

As you can see on the image on the right, 4 tagger API’s are supported, and on the Settings panel you have options to add API keys for Alchemy and Zemanta so they can be used.

Few more minor bugs are fixed, and few more things changed. Plugin stable 3.2 version will be released in the next couple of days. Please report any bugs or problems you may find in this version.

New permalinks rewriting is improved, and more info added for the fields you can use. Right now, this works great, and I was testing with many different configurations and permalinks structure. New custom fields are added in this version: for rich text editor and values listing. Also, many minor bugs are fixed in the custom meta box system.

The biggest problem with current permalinks rewriting in WordPress is that custom post types can have only one permalinks structure that is practically hardcoded and can’t be changed in any useful way, it can contain only post type name and post name. So, new version of the plugin will change that and will allow you to create any permalink structure you want, similar to default posts in WordPress now.

These new settings are added to Advanced tab for each custom post type. First option will activate support for intersection for archive of post types and taxonomies. For instance, if you have custom post type document, and taxonomy attached to it product. By default, archive URL for custom post type would look like this (can be different based on post type settings):

http://www.example.com/document/

But, if you want to filter posts in that post type by the taxonomy term, URL can look like this once you activate taxonomy intersections. This will get all posts for document post type that have plugin term in product taxonomy. New structure supports feed and paging, just like normal archives.

Other major change is single post permalinks for custom post types. Right now a single post link for custom post type document will always have structure like this: document/%post_name%. You can change document part to something else, but that’s it. If you want to include taxonomy, or author, or date you can’t do it. So, now this also changes, and for each post type you can specify the custom structure that can include all those things. On the image above you have how the example structure can look like and what you an use.

There will be more changes in new version, but these are most important, and it would be great to test them before rolling out stable 3.2 version. Right now, permalinks rewriting works fine, but it’s not tested enough so I can’t recommend using this live until 3.2 is released. Please, report any problems with this new rewriting methods in the comments or forum.

Widget

This will also be our very first theme that will be HTML5 based and will rely on CSS3. Layout will use no images, it will use CSS3 for shadows, gradients, borders. CSS code will contain elements made for different browsers, and so far it looks great in Opera, Chrome, Firefox, Safari. As for IE browsers, IE9 supports most of the elements used, IE7 and IE8 will ignore some of the styling, and I will try to add some support library that can transform the styles for IE7/8. I am not sure yet, if all the next themes will HTML5, this will be sort of a test to see how the theme will work and what are problems still with the compatibility.

Slider

Image on the left is a widget using gradient background and shadow for the whole widget. And the image on the right is detail of the slider area for the front page layout. Normal layout and front layout will use different configuration for sliders and different set of options. Normal layout will use same settings as the R8 theme used for Nivo Slider.

Right now front layout is done and working, and some elements for the normal layout are completed.  Theme is expected in the next 7-8 days.

Here are the changes in this version:

1. Long standing problem with renaming admin account in multisite environments (super admin accounts stop working after renaming) is now fixed.
2. Invalid completion status for backup creation in some cases (shows completed even while the backup is still running) is fixed and more process statuses are added.
3. Warning added for scheduling status when the timezone in WordPress is not set to manual time offset that can in some cases cause for tasks to be scheduled at the incorrect time.
4. Number of minor styling issues are fixed.

GD Press Tools 4.2: Restore Script

Restore or clone script was planned for this version, and than due to lack of time I decided to move it to next release. But, with longer testing of this version, I again had time to work on this. So, first version of this script is here. But, there will be many updates and changes in the future versions. Right now script can restore website as it was in the different location, clone it with changed site URL, changed database and tables prefix. There is not much of the error handling at this point, or saving debug info, but script works and for most uses it will be OK. If you have changed name of wp-content folder, restore will work with that too. For restore to work, backups must contain full database and full files inside, and they must be made with this RC version because of additional info.txt file added to each archive.

Multisite restore and clone is not yet supported. This will be added later, because procedure to make this work is very, very complicated.

As for the changes:

1. Sucuri Scan timeout is now 240 seconds, because in some cases scan can take a long time to complete. If after that time request is not done, error will be displayed.
2. Email notifications were broken and emails were sent empty or not sent at all. Plugin now properly prepares templates and headers for emails. Same problem was with auto tagger and backup.
3. Backup Tasks process log is improved to show only actual tasks timing for running each time. And if the task is still in waiting mode and is one time run only, you will be able to prevent it from running and remove from schedule.
4. Editing backup tasks is further improved, and all checkboxes should be working now. Settings cleanup for the tasks is updated to make sure that saved data can be used. If you have problems with tasks you created, you must remove them and create new ones.
5. Deleting CDN/FTP connections is working now.
6. Many minor improvements added to AJAX handling functions, print_r replacement functions, debugger.

So, you can now test restore script and all the changes made for this version. Restore script will remain with current features for 4.2, and if you have suggestions for it, that will be in development for future versions. Final 4.2 release is expected for Monday, August 15 2011. New RC thread is opened in the forums for reporting bugs in this release.

In the next 2 days tutorials will start coming for the new features: Using new Backup (video), Using Auto Tagger (video), Step by Step Backup and Restore.

GD Press Tools 4.2: Sucuri Free Security Scan

New panel in this version is Sucuri Powered Security Scan. You can scan your website or enter URL to any other. You will get info on existing malware, blacklisting, IFRAME’s, JavaScript files, server, application and more.

As for the backup, another long list of bugs is fixed, bringing us one step forward to stable 4.2 release. More tests are done to make sure that plugin works with non standard WP installations: renamed content file and/or custom database prefix. Email notifications and editing of tasks now work. Backup log is expanded with more info, database backup improved with better escaping of data, backup status information is expanded and improved. Cron Scheduler has additional button to display arguments for each job.

If you still have issue starting backups or creating tasks:  it’s highly recommended that you clean up all the tasks data from the database, and allow plugin to create all that again as it should be. So, go to the Plugin Tools panel, Reset tab, and check ‘Remove everything tasks related option, and click Reset button. Now, you should have Backup working as it should be.  Also, from Cron Scheduler tab remove (clear) these tasks: gdpt_backup_job (old backup job) and gdpt_task_backup (new one).

Leave all bug reports or other information in the comments or in the forum (there is a Beta #3 thread opened in GD Press Tools forum).

When running Quick Backup in the multisite environment, when on Network admin, everything will work as expected. On site level, full backup will fallback to only site database tables and site owned files. Only network admin can backup everything, and when you create backup tasks that was so, only Quick Backup was a problem.

Other major issue was with installation where wp-content folder is renamed. This now works also. There is only one instance that is not working and will not be supported for now: wp-content moved outside of WP folder. This case causes too many issues for backup procedure. Third major issue was ZipArchive built in PHP class. In some cases this was causing problems with adding files. For now, this method is disabled, and plugin will use only PCLZip class.

Log for backup is improved, additional paths cleanup added for inclusion and exclusions, problem with writable folders is not more visible and plugin will not allow backups to run if the folder is not writable, clear and abort buttons for backup process are now working.

As it was reported, there are some issues with some other plugins that can inject own JavaScript that can break GD Press Tools. Not much to do about it, other than disable problematic plugins. I will publish the list of these plugins once it all gets confirmed. Other than that, plugin is working great, and very stable. I am running Beta #2 on all my sites (not on Dev4Press yet), and I have zero problems with it.

For users that were using Alpha #2, new backup was broken, and default backup task missing (and quick backup broken because of that). To remedy this problem, you need to reinitialize backup tasks: Go to Plugin Tools panel, open Reset tab, and from Tasks And Connections select Backup tasks and click on Reset button. This should bring the default task and everything should be OK. Report back if this is still broken.

All icons and images are now replaced with new ones. New icons are done with Axialis IconWorkshop. Minor changes are added to File Manager with few fixes, Security panel got few things fixed and XML Sitemap manual rebuild works again.

First of all, Backups now use Tasks system developed previously for auto tagger. All other modules, if possible, they will use Tasks system in future versions. For improved flexibility, CDN and FTP is now separate panel as well, allowing you to define multiple connections you can use later in Backup and more.

GDPT 4.1: Quick Backup

For faster backups, there is a new option called Quick Backup (image on the right). Just click on the type of backup to create and that’s it, backup will be added as a background process. This is default backup option and in this case no settings are needed.

If you need detailed backup, things are much better now, since you can create and edit backup tasks. Once the task is created you can run it (with additional settings for CDN and few other things), or you can schedule it. One backup task can have multiple scheduled jobs.

To use new backup module, go to Backup panel. Now you open Tasks tab. There, you will see Default task (you can’t delete it or edit it, but you can run it or schedule. This task is used for Quick Backup (top red button). You can create new tasks and use them. They have much more options right now, and it is much easier to create exactly what you need. Also, on Backup Settings tab you will find more interesting things: email notification to edit and exclusions for files backup.

Old Meta Tags panel is now renamed to SEO. Old tabs on this panel are still here, and only new feature for now is Facebook Open Graph integration meta tags. More SEO features will come in future versions. Other changes in this version include many minor improvements to debugger, new auto tagger module, more interface improvements and fixes and changes for WordPress 3.2.

In the next 4-5 days, I will release 4.1 Beta version, and soon after that final 4.1 will follow. So, please report all errors or problems you encounter with this release, I expect that there are some bugs in still, mostly with new Backup module. There are many features planned for this plugin, and sometime next week plugin will be released in its alpha stage. At this point, 90% of the admin side is done, and some 20% of the front end rendering. For frontend rendering I am working with R8 theme. If you look at the product title, underneath you can see 5 links: Specifications, Related, Review, Reviews and Media. These are 5 separate pages you get for each product. You can control which of these you actually want for each product type. One of them can be set as a main one. Bellow that is a Manufacturer, and this is the taxonomy for this product type, and terms for it, in this case only one. You can assign as many taxonomies as you want.

GD Products Center 0.7 Alpha #1 is expected next week. It is preview version and many features will be still missing. Stable 1.0 version is expected in about 3-5 weeks.

Warning: This is a development snapshot of the upcoming version, and its for use only on test environments. I try to make even alpha versions as stable as possible, but still I can’t recommend that you use this plugin version on your live websites.

Tasks system is allowing creation of tasks. Task can be edited, and when needed you can run the task once or schedule it to run as a recurring cron job. If you make changes to the task, and task is added to cron, next time job is executed, new settings will be used. For each task plugin is gathering statistical data about execution. Current backup system will be remodeled to use tasks allowing you better control over the tasks execution.

Auto Tagger is now task based. And based on what it can do, its most comprehensive auto tagging system available for WordPress now. Tagger has much more settings you can control from post types, filtering of posts according to post ID’s, number of terms, to additional settings for controlling received terms.

Tagger now has 4 extraction methods: Yahoo API, Alchemy API, Zemanta API and internal tags extraction. Yahoo is better to get more relevant tags based on Yahoo database, Alchemy is also great and its sorting terms by relevancy, Zemanta will get less tags but it may be more relevant, and internal is faster but it will get only single word tags that are not very relevant. To use Alchemy or Zemanta, you need API Key. At the end of the post you can find the link to get this key. During the testing past week, I find that Alchemy is more reliable than Yahoo (often got the timeouts for requests), but Alchemy has 1000 requests a day limit for free accounts (Yahoo limit is 5000), but it can be increased if you pay. On tagger panel, on tools tab you have a test tool where you can add any text and plugin will test all extraction methods so you can compare results.

Tagger Form

Tagger gathers statistics for each extraction method, each task executed, and you can review what the tagger is doing, how fast and what kind of results you got each time its run. After tagging is completed email(s) will be sent. Email contents can be set from the Auto Tagger settings tab.

Alpha #3 is coming next week with first round of backup improvements and first step in using new tasks system. Please, test new version and report back any bugs you may find with both old and upcoming WordPress versions. Tagger is new and all tests are appreciated to make it better and bug free. At this point its looking stable, but I have yet to do large scale tests, and bugs are to be expected.

New Auto Tagger will allow you to select posts from different post types and to select taxonomy for each post type where to assign found tags (or terms if you prefer). Further, you can filter post by ID range, you can specify ID’s to exclude and you can set how many terms a post should have at most to be used for tagging. So, you can set that to 0, and all posts with no tags will be tagged. Set it to 5, and all posts with up to 5 terms will be tagged. Also, you can tag posts published in last 30 (or any other number) of days.

GD Press Tools 4.1: Auto Tagger

Options for tagging are many. You can set number of tags to get, you can control tags case, removal of existing tags and set priority of existing tags over new ones (to minimize tags in the system). You can create cron jobs that will be run as recurring jobs with set scheduler period. And, you can log details about each job into file.

GD Press Tools 4.1 Alpha #2 with new Auto Tagger will be released on Monday. Final 4.1 is expected in July.

Warning: This is a development snapshot of the upcoming version, and its for use only on test environments. I try to make even alpha versions as stable as possible, but still I can’t recommend that you use this plugin version on your live websites.

Enhanced Menu

Development of GD Press Tools 4.1 will take some time, since there are many features planned for this one, and plan is to have several alpha stages. Each stage will bring one new feature made as stable as possible, for testing, and bug fixing in next alpha version. This first alpha is released with bug fixes (minor sitemap problems, admin bar toggler visible in IFRAME elements and some warnings and notices in PHP), uses updated jQueryUI 1.8.13, adding changes for WordPress 3.2, enhanced color coding for admin menu, using timepicker for scheduling backup and sitemaps and new color scheme for the user interface.

Improved color scheme

Menu items (image on the left) uses different colors for different groups of menu items, that also depends on the WordPress mode (multisite, network mode…).  New color scheme for the user interface is simpler, doesn’t uses so many colors and now relies on black, red and white only. New interface looks better, especially in the new WordPress 3.2.

Alpha #2 is coming on Tuesday, and it will include scheduler for the Auto Tagger with more options on getting the tags for posts (post type filters and few others). Please, test new version and report back any bugs you may find with both old and upcoming WordPress versions.

In WordPress, you can have a theme that is based on another theme and using parts of that time. Child themes share much of the code with its base theme and if a template or file is missing from child theme, parent theme file is used. When xScape development started, unique structure of the framework wasn’t working for child themes. But now, that has changed.

All the latest improvements that will be in xScape 1.7 will allow for two things: creating child themes and using new xScape Core. When current themes get updated with xScape 1.7 you will be able to create child themes for them, pretty much as with any other WordPress theme.

I will also release xScape Core Theme that will have only framework inside, base template files and standard styling. xScape Core will not work on its own, and will be used by the themes. Some themes will get ‘Core’ versions that contain only theme specific files: templates, styling and layout. They will use xScape Core to load the framework. So, Core themes will be child themes to xScape Core. You can’t create child theme of a child theme, but this will help separate framework from individual themes. So, you can use xScape Theme Framework for child themes in two way: create child theme of a full, normal xScape based theme as they are right now, or make a copy of the Core theme and create own xScape Core Theme child theme.

Once the xScape 1.7 is ready next week, I will post a tutorials how to make both types of child themes.

Module: Side Scroller

xScape 1.7 will have two new modules. One, is already mentioned bbPress plugin support (that one is currently in beta) and the second one is called Side Scroller. This module adds a floating box outside of the content area, that will move along with the page scrolling, and will always remain on top of the visible part of the screen. It can contain different things, it can have 3 different widths and will be styled by the theme. Share This module is changed to support this new module (as on the image), but also, xScape theme settings will allow adding major share buttons to this area and freeing some space in the content for the post.

Beside two modules, new framework will feature many minor changes and improvements, more fonts will be added to Google Web Fonts module, Clicky tracking code is updated… Also, few more changes are expected for the interface to complete the cycle of changes in the past couple of versions.

This framework version will also mark end of (development) life for three themes: baseScape, airScape and photoScape. Next week they will get full support for all new xScape features including bbPress and Side Scroller modules. They will still work with new versions of the framework, but if some framework features come along that require changes to the theme files, they will not support these themes.

But, as previously announced, new photo/media theme is in development, and it will be called Liquid. It’s expected some time in June. Also, another theme is in planning stages, it will be blog oriented with interesting layout.

Plugin is still in development and bugs are to be expected. Do not use this version on your production website until the final version is released. 3.0 Final is expected next week.

Meta Boxes

Meta boxes editor allow for 7 different types of fields (for now). When displayed on the post edit page, these fields can have own controls. So, for image custom field you have options to select image from media library, for date field you will get the date picker. All fields have shortcode button to insert the code for the field into the content. Shortcode allows for the value to be wrapped into the tag with custom class and style. Image also can be displayed as image tag. And meta box works when in side area of the post editor or in the main area bellow the post edit content. There is no limit on how many fields you can add, or how many meta boxes you can have combining different custom fields. Meta boxes can be assigned to default or custom post types, and you can have more than one custom meta box for any post type.

New Interface

Interface is fully rewritten, and more inline with the trend used in all other of our plugins. This includes post types and taxonomies editors and lists displaying differently registered post types and taxonomies. All data is saved using AJAX and that allows for improved validation before saving and better flexibility of the editor.

List shows custom post types created by the plugin, default post types, but also custom post types that are registered by third party plugins or theme. Same layout is used for taxonomies.

Another much requested feature was restricted terms selection meta box for post editor. Right now you can add terms through these meta boxes, and in some cases its needed to limit that to only existing terms. Now, you can have that with two box configurations: single and multi terms selection.

Post types specification is updated once more, allowing for selecting menu icon and few other things. JavaScript files used by the plugin are improved and compressed.

What is still missing?

Only feature that is still in work is import and export of the settings. You will be able to export all definitions for post types or taxonomies, settings for the plugin and later import them into another installation. That will be added to final release.

You will be able to define custom fields. Each field can be of a different type (select list, boolean, number, text…), and for select list you can define possible values for the field. Custom field name is the name that will be used to save data into post meta table. Once you have the fields, you can create meta boxes. Each box can have one or more custom fields. And you can attach meta box to one or more post types.

On this image you see list of few meta boxes and opened meta box editor for assigning custom fields to it. You can rearrange list of custom fields in the order you want them to appear in the meta box.

Beta #1 is expected sometime this week. It will have all planned features implemented.

Admin bar toggle

On Monday, GD Press Tools 4.0.9 will be released with few more bug fixes and also some minor new features. Most important new feature is addition to the admin bar control and new toggle tab added to it allowing to show and hide the admin bar. You can see this on the image on the right. You can control position of the tab and default status for both admin and blog side, so you can have admin bar hidden when page is loaded.

Now to 4.1. Based on requests and suggestions I got in the past couple of weeks, I have created a list of features that will be added in 4.1. This is not final list, and maybe some more things will be added, this is just a current status.

• Integration into Admin Bar: some of the most important plugin options can be added to Admin Bar for quick access.
• Backup restore script: finally, you will be able to restore backup to another location or another server. A simple to use script will be available for this purpose. Process will be simple: select the backup file, set database access data, and script will unpack the archive with files and database, and it will execute the database. After that is done, script will modify wp-config.php with new database access parameters. There will be some restrictions (as it is to be expected), but process will be really simple and easy to perform.
• Actions database logging: plugin will be able to log into database wide selection of actions and operations about sent emails, login and registrations and more. This will be useful for analyzing the website activity and can be used to generate activity streams for users.
• Improved backup panel: this will be fully reworked to allowing more flexible tasks creation and editing. I still don’t know exactly what will be done here, but I have few mockups for new interface and new operations that plugin will support.

Development on 4.1 will start once GD Posts and Taxonomies Tools 3.0 is released (expected in about 2 weeks). I expected that the work on GD Press Tools 4.1 will take about 2-3 weeks, and I will release couple of beta versions for testing purposes. Plans for 4.2 are still not completed, but they will include SEO module (parts of that maybe end in 4.1, depending on time to do it). As always, all suggestions and welcome.

With more and more options added for post types and taxonomies registration, current editor is not very user friendly, with tons of settings put together. New interface splits settings into tabs and adds tooltip information about options. Also, it will use AJAX to save settings with improved validator.

GD CPT Tools 3.0: Editor for Post Type

Styling and layout is similar to one that will be added to GD Star Rating 2.0, and is evolution of interface used in xScape Theme Framework.

This first Alpha #1 still has old interface, but Alpha #2 (planned for Monday) will have new interface and second wave of new features. Changes in this version include already many new features and many more changes.

Major new feature is caching of registration objects.  If you add many new post types and taxonomies, every time page loads, plugin needs to assemble registration arrays for each one, and it’s a fast operation, but still takes time that can be saved with cache. So, registration objects are cached in database, and when you make a change to post type or taxonomy, cached object will be deleted so it can be recreated with new settings. One of the most requested features is limiting of terms assigned to posts to an existing list without possibility to add new one. Now, this is a special feature for all taxonomies, and will replace default post_tag or category meta box with new one that allows selection of terms only (one term or more then one). More changes are included with registering of post types and more options added, several bugs are fixed and several files are removed as obsolete.

So, if you want to test it, please report any problems with this current development version.

Before 3.0, there will be at least 2 minor revisions of current plugin version to improve on existing features and fix some bugs. Next 2.6.6 version will be released over the weekend with few bugs fixed and other minor changes.

As for 3.0, user interface will be improved to provide more on screen information. It will use similar method I have made for upcoming GD Star Rating 2.0 plugin using tool tips. There are many options available for custom posts and custom taxonomies and it can be overwhelming for users to understand what is used for what. One of the most requested feature is support for simple meta boxes for default and custom posts types that will allow setting number of custom options to use with shortcodes and functions for inserting into the post. Tools for importing and exporting settings for custom post types and custom taxonomies will be included, so you can easily export created elements to import on another website.

These are preliminary features for new version, but all suggestions are welcome. So, if you have some interesting idea for this plugin, please leave a comment for further discussion.

Opera 11 with Dragonfly Debugger

Opera 11: Intro

Even with only 3% share of the browsers marked worldwide, I think that Opera is best overall browser available. Opera now has everything other browsers have (extensions were the only big flaw of Opera, but Opera 11 has them), and offers much more. Major issue with Opera is that is too standard oriented (yeah, the irony), and because of that some websites (very, very rare) can look a bit wrong in Opera. Most website problems are caused not by Opera but by websites that use browser sniffing code that intentionally cripples website for some browsers, without even testing it, and Opera is usually targeted. These are rare things, and even despite that Opera is the best browser available now.

For web development, Opera has Dragonfly. Dragonfly started slow some 2 years ago, but now it can do anything Firebug for Firefox can do. Biggest problem is that you need some time to get used to different interface and different controls layout. But out of the box, you get much more than with Firebug including: support for HTML5 storage, Color Picker with palette editor, comprehensive CSS and JS errors panel (with extra info on errors in SVG, Java, HTML, XML XSLT including CSS filter settings), amazing JavaScript debugger with syntax color coding and much more. For some of the advanced features you need to install more Firebug related extensions in Firefox and that will make it slower and slower. That’s not happening with Opera and I really don’t remember when Dragonfly in Opera crashed even with 40 or more tabs open.

Firefox 4: Intro

I never was fan of Firefox. But, for the long time, Firefox had one very important advantage (from developers point of view): Firebug extension for web development.

Last week, a long time overdue, Firefox 4.0 was released. I tried several beta versions over the past 4-5 months, and they were actually worse than 3.6 versions. But, things changed for better, and Firefox turned out to be better browser than I expected. Most important thing is the speed and lower memory usage. Apart from cosmetic changes, Firefox 4 has important updates to security, support for latest web technologies, and many changes to the tabs. New tab groups feature is total rubbish, it’s slow and confusing. Opera’s tab stacking is much, much better. Firefox ‘borrowed’ many features Opera has for sometime now like new orange button replacement for top menu.

But, since I use Firefox for development only, I am happy that Firefox is faster and that it’s crashing far less then 3.6. Firebug extension is standard tool for every developer, but depending on what you need to do, debugging can be nightmare due to crashes and memory leaks. Debugging large document with a lot of JavaScript and DOM changes will easily crash on a Quad Core computer with 8GB RAM leaking couple of GB of memory in Firefox.

Compared to Dragonfly, you will need to add few more Firebug related extensions for cookies and color picker that are standard in Opera. So far (as far as I know) there is no HTML5 storage support in Firebug and error reporting in Firebug is not as good as in Opera.

Opera 11: Stability & Speed

Even if you use alpha and beta development versions, Opera is very, very stable browser, even for development and debugging. On the average, I have 20-40 tabs opened in Opera non stop (stacked in few stacks), and Opera is always running on both my computers, one of them is now running for 44 days without restart and Opera is on for 44 days without crashing once (stable 11.0)! On my development laptop I use always latest development versions and they do crash once in every few days.

Opera is fast. Very, very, very fast. Only Google Chrome can be compared to it. There is nothing more to say, because even with new 4.0, Firefox is still much slower not as nearly comfortable to use. Opera is fast and stable even with many extensions active (I have 10 extensions active in Opera).

Firefox 4: Stability & Speed

Firefox 4 is more stable and faster than 3.6. But, it’s still nowhere stable enough for smooth development work I need it to be. Even when I use only one or two tabs active, every 2 hours of work, and I have to close it to free up memory and to close JavaScript that I was trying to debug and that will crash Firefox on it’s own if left on for a bit longer. Opening more than 5-6 tabs for debug purposes makes it very hard to work with. And, more extensions active, more instability. Speed is not that bad as it was in 3.6, but when you do intensive debug work it can get very annoying to wait for something I can do in Opera almost instantly.

When used for casual browsing, Firefox is not bad, but with many tabs active is unusable. New tab groups are massive fail: slow, confusing and nowhere near intuitive to use as tab staking in Opera, and if you are not careful, you can easily close all your tabs with one button click.

Most important thing with all this: things I can do in Opera with debugging I can never do with Firefox with same level of comfort. Only reason I still have Firefox on is to test code compatibility just in case, and because I still didn’t quite used to Dragonfly in Opera. Well, years of using Firebug has taken its toll.

Why no Chrome (or Safari) in this comparison?

I very rarely use Google Chrome and I don’t like it’s debugger and development tools as too confusing. I only use Chrome (as I do Safari or IE) for testing. IE is awful browser in any version (including new 9.0) and debug in it is a nightmare. Only (proper) way to debug in IE is with Visual Studio.

Opera 11 vs Firefox 4

I am web developer for some 10 years, and I used every browser in that period. Opera has come a long way, and right now it’s the best browser for any use. For development, I am now doing 90% of my debug work in Opera, and I will not go back to Firefox until Mozilla do a right thing and make a fully rounded browser that is fast and stable. As it looks right now, that’s not gonna happen anytime soon.

If you are developer stuck to Firefox and all it’s bugs and many problems, slowness and instability, I highly recommend you try Opera 11. You will be surprised how good it is.

Plugin adds date year, month and day based templates for archives and adds ID based post templates, that, as far as I know will work fine. But, post types templates for archives are a bit of a problem.

For WP 3.0, plugins added type-{post-type}.php and type.php templates support for archives of custom post types posts. WP 3.1 added standard archive-{post-type}.php template and for various reasons, type templates stopped working. Plugin implements several functions and enhancements that don’t play well with WP 3.1 due to conflicted functionality, so last plugin version 2.6.2, added some warnings and more info on how to use the templates.

GD CPT Tools: Settings

Many users of Pro version liked the idea of custom post types archives and used them with the plugin long before WP got them, and now is the problem compatibility of using both. So, on the plugin Settings panel you see options, and first two are now clearly marked as WP 3.0 options. So, if you use WP 3.1, disable these.

Third option from the top is to add type based templates to WP 3.1, but that is not working as you expect it now. On some installations is OK, but not on all. It all depends on the existing rewrite rules and on some installations is conflicted. I still have no idea why this happens, and I am trying to determine what is happening with WP template loader to cause problems.

Solution to problem is simple, and it involves renaming the existing template. So, if you have custom post type movie, and your existing template is type-movie.php, simply rename it to archive-movie.php. WP 3.1 will now load this template and everything will work, and all the code you already have will be used.

But, I will still try to determine why the loading of additional template for custom post types fails in WP 3.1, and you can expect solution in some of the following plugin versions.

Slider / Sidebar

New xScape Theme Framework based theme called Focus is very close to release, and here is a small preview of how the theme is gonna look like. Currently, only one style is available using gold/red colors, but more than 10 styles will be available with built in color style switcher.

Focus uses jQuery Nivo Slider with wide range of settings to control navigation, transitions and animation of slides. Theme has two menus, with top level navigation can be on top of layout or between main menu and content. Header area where logo or site name is displayed can have background image. And, all colors can be set through theme settings as a custom theme style.

Footer / Widgets

Theme mixes news/magazine, normal blog or photo layouts so it can be used for a lot of different things. There will be several different layouts available for archives and individual posts, including brand new template for images, that will be added to other themes also.

Focus will be released with xScape Theme Framework 1.6.0 that will have several new features and number of improvements and fixes. Theme beta version will be released on Tuesday, with final version to be released by the end of the next week.

New debugger settings panel is displayed on the image bellow. Very detailed settings allows you to control how to display the debugger and who can see it.

Debugger Settings

Debugger can be opened with button embedded on the Admin Bar (WP 3.1 required) or with a static / floated button that will work with WordPress 3.0 also. Debugger window can be displayed as a modal popup overlaying the page, can be embedded after the footer or it can be added as a docked panel at the bottom.

Debugger will display: WP_Query status, WP Actions/Filters, WP_DB object and queries, URL Rewriting status, Errors and Warnings, WP Internal Cache, PHP Constants, Page loading stats and other things. But, you will also be able to add own data there. Plugin will have debug print functions that will output results into the debugger without disrupting the page, you can add own tabs with debug info (for your own plugin/theme debugging) and much more.

Plugin will be released during this month. As announced before, Beta 1 will be released on Monday, February 14 2011.

GD Custom Posts And Taxonomies Tools Pro 2.6 already includes this latest version. Today, GD aZon FUSION will be updated and GD Affiliate Center 1.2.0 will be released over the weekend. GD Press Tools will get new library with release of 4.0. And Beta 1 of this plugin will be released on Monday. xScape 1.5.9 will be released sometime next week, also with gdr2 2.2 library and that will introduce some very significant performance improvements.

Core / Log / Fnc / Cache

Main file and class of gdr2 is called gdr2_Core. This file will load additional base files with shared functions (many of the overrides for older versions of WordPress), gdr2_Log class and one more file with gdr2_Cache class. This is the new class added in this version allowing use of WordPress transient options as a cache storage method. APC support for this class will be added at a later date.

New cache system allows storing of rendered blocks in the database allowing significant speedup of rendering operations that need large number of queries. xScape menus will use it, and preliminary tests show that for 3 menus used on Dev4Press, number of SQL queries now is 24, with new cache system is only 6. Not only that, these 6 are only basic select queries that are executed almost instantaneously. GD Custom Posts And Taxonomies Tools Pro 2.6 uses cache for all 3 widgets.

Widget

This gdr2_Widget class is much improved in the new version and has built in support for new cache system, built in support for displaying widget to users, visitors or both. Registration of widget and few other things are also improved. I have few more ideas on further improving this class, but for now there will be no more updates.

UI / jQueryUI / Grid / Utils / Img

First three classes are used for rendering interface elements, mostly for admin side. Many parts of these classes are not yet done, and it will take a while to make them full, but they are usable in this version also. Utilities is a new class with only few functions, mostly for checking system requirements at this point. Image class is not changed in this version, but it’s a very powerful class that can handle uploading, resizing and other operations.

How to get the library?

Right now, you can’t download it freely. It’s distributed with plugins and themes, and it’s also GPL2 licensed. If you are interested in getting and using the library in your projects, please contact me.

Sitemap Build Status

You can see when the map is built, how many files are in it and how many links. You see used PHP memory and time needed to build the map. On this image you see that post types are split each one into separate file, but all taxonomies are in one, and all date archives in one. You can control splitting in different ways depending on your content.

Build process will product 5 files in most cases, or more depending on settings. 4 files are actual maps (double that if you want both uncompressed XML and compressed GZIP files) and one is for index. Index is only one submitted to the search engines, they will find the rest of files from that one. Index file can contain only GZIP or XML versions, and by default GZIP versions are included. You see size and number of links of each file and if the file belongs to the index file or not.

You can see results from sending sitemaps notifications to search engines.

There are several XML Sitemaps plugins available, but none of them is flexible enough to cover all things I need for my projects, and none of them has full and proper support for multisite installations. XML Sitemaps in new GD Press Tools 4.0 Pro will support all sitemaps features including different methods of splitting maps into files, working with custom post types and custom taxonomies, several methods of expanding maps, controlling when to run sitemaps rebuilding and more. File Editor

File Manager will allow editing of some file types: text, css, php, js… Editor is simple, no highlighting, just edit and save.

But, most important thing is info about security concerns with using file manager. File Manager panel will be available only to administrators. In multisite environment, only super admins will be able to use it. Also, there will be additional methods of protecting access to it. All, operations and links on manager will be protected with nonce strings. And there will be a PHP constant to completely disable and hide File Manager. Also, manager will allow only browsing of the WordPress installation, you will not be able to go under that folder and browse server content outside of it.
