Plugin Installation & Update

All Dev4Press plugins can be installed into WordPress using different methods. These include the use of the specialized Dev4Press Updater plugin (it can install and update all Dev4Press Pro plugins and addons), using WordPress directly, or using FTP. All three methods can be used for the plugin update.

Free plugins from WordPress.org

Many Dev4Press plugins are available in the WordPress.org plugins repository. These plugins can be installed via WordPress -> Plugins -> Add New Plugin interface. Just type in the plugin name in the search box, and the plugin will be listed with the option to install, and after installation, to activate. Plugins installed through WordPress.org are automatically updated, and anytime a new version is available, it will appear in the Plugins or Update panel for you to update.

Installation

With WordPress Plugins Add New

Suppose your license is purchased with Freemius (and for all licenses purchased after January 17, 2025). In that case, the first-time installation of the Pro version of the plugin has to be done manually, following the normal installation process for all WordPress plugins using a ZIP file.

  1. Download the plugin ZIP file to your computer.
  2. Log in to WordPress Administration.
  3. Open Plugins panel, Add New.
  4. Click on the Upload option at the top of the page.
  5. An upload form appears. Click Choose and select the plugin ZIP archive from your computer.
  6. Click Install Now.
  7. The plugin will be uploaded and installed, and you will get the option to activate it.

With Dev4Press Updater

This is now legacy method

Dev4Press Updater can be used to install and update plugins linked to licenses purchased through our previous payment processor, MyCommerce, before January 17, 2025. However, it can’t download, install, or update plugins purchased through Freemius.

It is highly recommended that you use the Dev4Press Updater plugin to install all other plugins because it integrates into WordPress and allows you to have updates for all Dev4Press plugins available inside WordPress, as with any other plugin. However, if you want to install it via WordPress Plugins Add New or FTP, you can download ZIP files for plugins from individual plugin home pages (each one has a Download page) or via your Dev4Press Dashboard Quick Downloads page.

  1. Setup Dev4Press Updater plugin following instructions.
  2. Open Dev4Press menu, Install New panel.
  3. You will see the list of products you have a license for.
  4. Select the plugin you want to install and click the Install Now link.
  5. The plugin will be installed, and you will get the option to activate it.

With FTP Upload

  1. Download the plugin ZIP file to your computer.
  2. Unzip the archive, and you will get a directory with the plugin’s name.
  3. Use an FTP client to upload content to your website FTP server.
  4. Locate the ‘plugins’ directory for your website.
  5. Move the directory that you have unpacked from the ZIP archive to the ‘plugins’ directory.
  6. Wait for the upload to finish.
  7. Log in to WordPress Administration.
  8. Open the Plugins panel and find the plugin.
  9. Click Activate.

Update

If you want to install a new version of the plugin you already have installed, there are several ways to do so.

Plugin Settings

When it comes to updating, it is essential to know that even if you remove the Dev4Press plugin, all plugin settings remain in the database, so when you update it later, it will pick up the old settings – no settings will be lost after plugin update!

Freemius auto update

All plugins containing Freemius SDK integration will get updates directly through the WordPress update system for as long as your license is active.

With Dev4Press Updater

Once you set up the Dev4Press Updater plugin, it will notify you once the update is available. When this plugin finds an update, the update is done as with other WordPress plugins (directly from the WordPress Plugins panel, WordPress Update, and Dev4Press Updater’s panel).

With WordPress, Plugins Add New

An update is the same as an installation, and it follows the same steps as the Installation. You don’t need to remove the old plugin version; when you upload the file and WordPress determines that the plugin is already installed, you need to confirm that you want to replace the existing version with the new one.

With FTP Upload

It is the same as with installation using FTP upload. But since the old plugin version is already there, the FTP client will ask you what to do, and you always choose to replace existing files.

What’s next?

When the plugin is installed or updated, each has an Install and Update panel where you need to check and complete the process and make sure everything is OK.

Important Notice

If you are updating a plugin with addons (GD Rating System Pro, GD Press Tools Pro, and GD Mail Queue Pro), it is highly recommended to disable the plugin and all its addons you have installed. In some cases, addons are updated simultaneously with the main plugin, and you must update the main plugin and all its addons available for update.

You can use any update method; just ensure the plugin and addons are disabled before the update. After you update the plugin and its addons, you can reactivate them. No settings are lost during this process.
