With all plugins getting updates last week, and everything that is going on with the security concerns with WordPress and PHP in the past months, the next wave of updates for all Dev4Press plugins will have more strict release changes.
Last week we got major security vulnerability scare with PHP2Shell, which while solved, it is still not completed and will get more updated in the coming months. New vulnerabilities are discovered faster then before in WordPress and all other software thanks to the use of AI models that can analyze code base and run different scenarios to find holes. Therefore, developers must adapt their security practices immediately.
To make sure all Dev4Press plugins are secure and that future development is viable and able to deliver secure code, there are few changes coming to our update schedule and release process starting next month and affecting all new Dev4Press releases starting November 1, 2026.
- Every new Dev4Press plugin release will now target PHP 8.1 (or PHP 8.2 in some cases) as a minimal required and supported version of PHP. PHP end of life schedule is very important as the security fixes are available for supported versions, and while there are backported unofficial releases, I think that we need to move faster and adopt latest and more secure PHP releases to make sure websites have better protection.
- Every new DevrPress plugin release will support maximum of 6 major WordPress versions. We alreayd have this implemented with the latest releases, so with WordPress 7.2 coming soon, Dev4Press plugins will support WordPress 6.7 and newer only.
- We have new release protocols to quickly have all plugins updated and released with latest Freemius SDK as soon as possible to quickly get up to date with any changes SDK brings in the future.
- All plugins will go through more rigorous security checks and testing before each release.
Right now, the release plan for the next few months have been preliminary made, and it will start with major update to BreadcrumbsPress 5.0 in the first week of Novemeber. By the end of november, two plugins will get major updates, including CoreSocial. And, we are in the final stages of developing a new WordPress plugin that should be released by the end of November or early December. In December 3 more plugins will get major updates as well.
Let me know what you think about he requirement changes, and changes we plan to follow.
