Dev4Press website dedicated to premium WordPress plugins has been launched on December 15, 2009. But, I have bought the domain almost a year before, because I liked the domain name.
Dev4Press domain was registered in January of 2009, and by that time, I was already working as a freelancer for WordPress for over a year. I had few plugins released on WordPress.org, including, at the time, very popular GD Star Rating plugin. Back in 2008, I was working as a freelancer (as a side job), and I wanted to make the website that will include relevant information for potential clients. I never had enough time to make the website, but by the end of 2008, I had an idea for the domain that will say that I am a developer for WordPress development.
So, early Dev4Press was a website for publishing reviews of plugins and themes, offering some tips on WordPress, some information about my plugins and themes, and information about freelance development. It was using some popular theme at the time and a self-made Dev4Press logo.
In early 2009, I have quit my regular job at the time, to focus on WordPress freelance development. In March of 2009, I registered my business and began working freelance full time. At that time, I had no desire to make the plugins business my main focus, because freelance work was going great, and some extra time I had, I used to work on my free plugins. Before the Summer of 2009, I had 4 plugins published on WordPress.org, and I was working on some side projects too, including few more plugins.
In 2009 there were already some companies and developers offering premium plugins, and during the Summer of 2009, I started thinking about trying to sell licenses my plugins. I had to add a lot more features to make a clear distinction between free and pro versions, to make a new website… I set aside 2 months for that. Initially, I wanted to launch the website in October, but I had to push the date a few times, landing on December 15, 2009.
Stay tuned for more history of Dev4Press in the coming weeks…
