Waiting for WordPress 3.1

With new WordPress 3.1 coming out soon, it’s time to check out all plugins and fix the potential problems and compatibility issues. But, this time, job of doing that is much more complicated than usually, mostly due to the changes in way WP 3.1 is loading jQuery and jQueryUI libraries.

jQueryUI loading is changed, and divided into more minor parts. So, if you have other jQuery library that depends on jQueryUI widgets, it will not work anymore, since widget library needs to be loaded now. So, check out all plugins that do that and make sure that everything is loaded as it should.

Here is the table of Dev4Press plugins and current minimal version supported. It includes upcoming versions of plugins that will be updated this week to support upcoming WP 3.1:

Plugin WP 2.8 WP 2.9 WP 3.0 WP 3.1
GD Star Rating 1.9.6 OK OK OK /
GD Press Tools Lite 2.5.7 OK OK OK OK
GD Press Tools Pro 3.8.6 OK OK OK OK
GD Custom Posts And Taxonomies Tools Lite 1.3.0 / OK OK OK
GD Custom Posts And Taxonomies Tools Pro 2.4.2 / OK OK OK
GD Simple Widgets Lite 1.6.0 OK OK OK OK
GD Simple Widgets Pro 2.0.5 OK OK OK OK
GD LinkedIn Badge 2.1.3 OK OK OK OK
GD aZon FUSION Pro 0.8.1 / / OK OK
GD Affiliate Center Pro 1.1.0 OK OK OK OK

New versions of GD Custom Posts And Taxonomies Tools and GD Press Tools are coming very soon. Same goes with GD LinkedIn Badge and GD aZon FUSION. I am testing with latest development version of WP 3.1 and I will make imporvements if needed in the coming weeks leading to the final release of 3.1.

More info on new WordPress is coming. Also, expect another benchmark post as soon as final 3.1 is released to compare it to WP 3.0.

  2. Some of WP 3.1 new features made more simply post customization, but is not clear for me if is possible to have post personalized on category basis that have their own header, footers and sidebars. Something that is in xScape roadmap. Simply want to know if WordPress 3.1 make work more simple
for you? So time for that version of xScape is nearer.

    • Post format that is coming in WP 3.1 is one of the worst features added to WP in the last several versions. Only one theme supports them (and very badly at that), and to make all other support similar design pattern is impossible and very hard to adopt and change thousands and thousands of themes and the way they are working for god knows how long. Post format should not be core feature at all, but it is now.

xScape and post customizations is coming in two ways: each post will allow for own layout managment, posts belonging to one term in any taxonomy will allow for own layout managment. But, problem is that it will require a lot of work and it will take several versions to iron things out. Main issue is the JavaScript needed to be loaded into the post editor, that will not be compatible with each WP default jQueryUI used, so I am considering some solutions including already tested method used in GD aZon FUSION plugin with iframe popups for settings.
